Authentic village from which you can admire a suggestive panorama that extends from Mount Pollino to the Gulf of Taranto.
The history of the village
The origins of Alessandria del Carretto date back to an ancient parchment of 1193, in which the land on which it stands was transferred to a pre-existing monastery. Initially known as "Torricella", in 1663 it was refounded thanks to the efforts of Prince Alessandro Pignone del Carretto, whose name it bears today, a unique peculiarity in Italy.
From its heights it is possible to admire a suggestive panorama that extends from Mount Pollino to the Gulf of Taranto. Immersed in uncontaminated nature, the village resists as a rare oasis of tranquility, where to take refuge to have peace and return to rediscover flavors of the past. The facades of stone buildings animate the streets of the historic center, where you can see craftsmen dedicated to woodworking alongside young artists, intent on creating colorful murals during the annual festival of the same name.
The vitality of its inhabitants makes it one of the most characteristic villages of the region. Merit that is attributed to the ability to witness, promote and enhance the most ancient and traditional soul of the territory through festivals, events and cultural centers. In such a rich territory, then, could not miss the many food and wine specialties whose aromas and flavors celebrate distant and never forgotten traditions.
Naturalistic Museum of the Wolf
The idea of the establishment of the Naturalistic Museum of the wolf in the village of Alessandria del Carreto was motived by a serious episode that occurred on 14 August 1995 for the massacre of a pack of wolves carried out by breeders who transfer their cows to the mountain pastures in the summer on the slopes of Monte Sparviero.
The violent and unprecedented event was reported by the national press for several days and the Pollino Park Authority therefore considered it appropriate to activate the determination to establish a Naturalistic Wolf Museum in Alessandria del Carretto, rightly acknowledging the requests of some Alexandrian citizens.
The Museum is made up of several thematic rooms, with various display cases that act as custodians of the flora and fauna of the Calabro-Lucan Apennines.
